How Do I Increase My Chances?

I just got off a call for CareerCast, the podcast I do at Chicago Booth. The conversation was about career change with questions about both the opportunities and challenges. What seemed to be a pivot aspect for success was whether someone is stopped by “No.” When someone says “No,” do you let the rejection send you into a tailspin or do you redirect with a question to yourself, “How do I increase my chances of success?” There are many ways to up your victory rate – from doing your research to adding value to your network. Choose what’s right for you, your situation, and your target. Of course, have fun and be gracious.

Have a successful day,
Anita

From Goal Setting to Goal Getting

I was chatting with a friend today at lunch and she was sharing her long standing goal to write a book. She has been told since we was little girl that she is a talented writer. Yet so far, she hasn’t put words to the page even though it’s been a goal of hers for years.

As we talked more and more, she realized that her fear stands between her and realizing the goal. She is a rather brilliant person, so by the time we finished lunch she decided to “chunk” her goal into a size that she can handle given her family, job, and part-time business. Even if the tiny steps take a long time to achieve, she will be making steady progress – increasing her confidence, courage, and completion rate.

So as you set new goals, think about the steps or even half-steps you can move towards right now and actually do them.

Have a great Monday,
Anita

Even If You Doubt It, Appreciation Changes Everything

Whenever I feel that the world isn’t smiling on me and affording me all that I believe I deserve, I realize that I am the one not smiling on the world. So when I have the presence of mind to pause, I find that an appreciation shopping spree sets everything straight. Now this doesn’t mean I go shopping for people to express gratitude to me – just the opposite. I reach out to others – in person, by phone, Skype, and the old school (yet super reliable) hand written note. Whatever works for you, do it. AND expect NOTHING in return. Then just notice what happens.

Have a great weekend,
Anita

Are You Receiving More or Less of What You Want?

I am working on edits for my book project. I am thrilled to be in the final stage – just before the launch. Yet I noticed a slightly unappreciative sense creep into my heart as I noticed edits I sent to the design team earlier this month were not done. I literally stopped myself and said “Whoa!” out loud. My active pause made me step back and regain my perspective. There are 155 pages and most edits completed. Where had my compassion gone?

The team has done an amazing job and created a brilliantly designed book. The edits are tiny and clearly eclipsed by what is perfect. So in a flash, I went from receiving less (my perception) to receiving massive amounts of value. I now have happy heart.

Have an appreciative day,
Anita

The Treasure of the Details

For those of you who know me – I am NOT the queen of details. I can do them, see that all are considered in a decision or project, but details are not my favorite focus. Yet this week, as I am reviewing the (near) final copy for volume 1 of the What I Wish I Had Known book series, I am seeing the treasure of the details. Each detail is a fact about a person’s life or their words of wisdom. From this perspective, I see platinum in the details – precious indeed.

Happy Wednesday,
Anita

The True Path to Success

I was chatting with a friend last night about happiness and success. She is going through a challenging time and some people would be squashed by the magnitude of her obstacle. Yet my friend views the difficulty differently. She knows in her heart of hearts that this is the opportunity of a lifetime – to change the things that are troubling her into lasting success and happiness. Her taking responsibility for her own happiness and ultimate achievement is the true path to success.

Have an amazing victory, EV.

Have a great Tuesday,
Anita

Being “Too” Busy

Sometimes I just feel too busy to do even one more thing. This morning felt like that – hence a later than usual blog post. Sorry about that.

For me, “too” busy can actually be a euphemism for a whole variety of things from “I have five bazillion things or my plate” to “I just don’t want to do whatever I am being asked to do, so too busy is an acceptable excuse.” Well, I have taken a different approach this year – which I needed to remind myself of this morning – and that is this: say yes when I really want to and/or to what I need to do in order to fulfill a commitment I have previously made. If I follow this simple system, I will be doing more of what I want and need to do and less of what I allow myself to be guilted into doing. That way, I will be get more done with greater happiness and success.

What a concept!

Have a great day,
Anita
