Skin in the Game

I was listening to the story of an entrepreneur whose company had hit it big. The program was presenting it like he was an overnight success – the often misleading mythology that start-up stars are born that way and patience is for staid, slow, stodgy companies.

Being the researcher that I am, I did a little detective work and discovered that this entrepreneur had started more than one company and none achieved instant success – not even close. When asked, in an article I found, what enabled him to finally find a winner – he shared that this time he had real skin in the game. In the earlier ventures, he was only partially committed – and his results were only partially successful.

I think that the lesson here goes WAY beyond start-ups: with strong commitment (skin in the game as it were), the outcomes are bigger, better, and inspiring!
