The Complacence Cure

I was chatting with a friend the other day who is clearly very successful – personally and professionally. She has received many honors, awards, and choice jobs for more than 20 years.

When I asked her what she believes is the “secret” to her success, she didn’t pause at all. “It’s the periodic setback – or even better, choosing something so much of a stretch that you won’t make it the first time.” I must admit my friend’s response surprised me, but as I thought about it -she’s absolutely right.

Think about working with personal trainers: they don’t push you until your muscles almost fail, they want the last rep to be impossible – to the point where you are about to puke and fall onto the floor.

If you do what you have always done, you won’t advance any further. Not you don’t have to, but you get to if you want to.
