I was talking to a friend, (let’s call her Jessica) this week who was having a really hard time connecting with people who might help her with her job search. Even with dozens of introductions, she had zero people meet with her. At first, she blamed everyone – from the people who made the recommendations to the individuals who flatly rejected her request for time. Clearly that wasn’t helping her.
One of her mentors gave her sage advice, “Jessica, I understand that this is a difficult time for you – but I feel that you are a big part of the problem.” Jessica was stunned, but to her credit, she took the feedback and began to change her behavior. Instead of reaching out with a sense of entitlement, she started to build bridges – with much better results.
Have a great day,
