My Executive Education class on negotiating is extremely enlightening. One small thing that can make a big difference in the outcome of a negotiation is finding the interests of the other parties. Clearly something we all know, but few put into practice.
As I said, very few people seek to understand. When they ask the simple question, “Why?” a whole new world can open up. Not only is there a better understanding of the interest among the people involved (assuming you trust the other person/people), you can actually help create more for everyone.
So ask why and listen without preconceived notions.
