Last week I was chatting with a friend who was having a hard time connecting with her new co-workers. Somehow, she kept being left off of email and omitted from meetings.
She was the first to admit that she was upset and took the treatment of her personally. She realized it was possible that she was being left out deliberately and maliciously – yet the team did hire her, so what was the deal?
To my friend’s credit, she decided to ask her manager if she could be included in relevant email and some of the meeting in which she felt she belonged. Her manager had just forgotten to add her to the team listservs. Since then, my friend has been looped in to the comings and goings of the team.
I think that the reason she received a positive reaction was two-fold. First, she just asked – no accusations, complaints, or whining. Second, the courage she showed in doing so reconfirmed that to her manager that he had made a good decision in hiring her.
