I was watching The Next Food Network Star recently. One of more competent and potentially extraordinary candidates didn’t make it past the second week. How could that be? If the food was fabulous, how could a person be sent home so early in the competition?
Researchers, Cuddy, Fiske, and Glick, would say the Food Network competitor has competence, but lacked warmth. If you don’t have competence, you won’t get out of the starting gate. Yet, without warmth, you can be the most brilliant person in the world and others will actually want you to fail.
So beef up your skills, knowledge, and experience – and build your warmth. Once again, it’s the heart that trumps just about everything.
