I talk to a lot of people about their careers and those who are willing help others advance professionally. I asked potential mentors or career advocates what gives people an edge as they look to re-entry the job market, advance in their companies, change careers, find a new job, or start a venture.
Their answer was straightforward, directly, and simple: follow-up. My immediate thought was – “Doesn’t everyone do that?” Apparently, not. One business leader told me that of the approximately 150 people who reached out to him in the last five year (clearly he’s big on tracking), only two ever thanked him or followed up. TWO – can you believe it. What a missed opportunity?!?
